There are now over 320 prisoners in the State of Michigan serving life sentences without parole for crimes they committed as juvenile offenders.
It's a known fact that juveniles often become the targets of abuse for adult prisoners. Despite their age, these individuals immediately have to cope, adapt, and mature in an unforgiving environment where survival is paramount.
Each profile under "Our Stories" documents experiences living with adult prisoners and dealing with challenging situations as well as personal accomplishments and hopes for the future if granted a second chance.
Under current law, children sentenced to mandatory life in prison are not eligible for release. It's time for legislative change to empower parole boards to give serious consideration to juvenile offenders who have demonstrated their commitment to rehabilitate within the system and offer them the opportunity for a second chance.
